How do you keep participant data safe with almost no budget?

We work with refugee families. The data we hold could genuinely put people at risk. We have no IT staff and no budget for a system.

Start by collecting less. Most forms ask for things nobody ever uses. If you do not hold it, it cannot leak. That costs nothing.

Strongly agree. After that: full disk encryption on every device, a password manager for the team, and never putting names in a spreadsheet filename. All free.

Collecting less had not occurred to me as a security measure. That reframes the whole thing.
