Microfinance did not work for us, and I think I know why

diego_fContributor··1 view
We ran a small loan programme for four years. Repayment was 94 percent, which everyone told us was excellent. We closed it last year. The repayment number was hiding the thing that mattered. People were repaying on time by borrowing elsewhere. We were not growing businesses, we were moving debt around. I would rather say that publicly than let the 94 percent go on being quoted.

Thank you for saying this. The sector rewards the metric that is easy to report and this is exactly the problem with it.

What would you measure instead, if you started again?

Whether household income went up two years later. It is much harder to collect and it is the only number that answers the question.

This is going to change how we write our own report. Thank you.
