Legitimate competitions do not charge an entry fee to consider you for a cash prize. Some arts and film awards do charge small fees, so check the organisation rather than assuming either way.

Read the judging criteria and structure your entry against them in that order. Judges score against a sheet, and making them hunt for the point costs you marks.

Answer the question they asked, not the one you prepared for. Reviewers read hundreds of these and a beautiful answer to a different question is the easiest kind to put down.
