If there is a word limit, use most of it. Coming in at half the limit reads as not having much to say, whether or not that is true.

Start the documents before the essay. References, transcripts and proof of status are the things that take weeks and are outside your control. The writing is the part you can do in a hurry; the paperwork is not.

Apply even if you think you are underqualified. The people deciding are looking for fit, not for a perfect score, and the applicant who did not apply is the only one guaranteed not to get it.
