If there is a public vote stage, find out before you enter. It changes what kind of entry wins and how much work it will be.

Check who owns what you submit. Some competitions take rights to entries, and that matters enormously if the work is your livelihood.

Give your referees the deadline and a short note on what you are applying for. A referee writing blind produces a generic letter, and a generic letter is close to no letter.
