The African STARS Fellowship Programme

by | Dec 27, 2025

The African STARS (Science, Technology, and Research Specialists) Fellowship Programme stands as a critical initiative for clinical research. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, this program aims to build a robust pipeline of African leaders in clinical research and development. Consequently, it addresses the continent’s pressing need for high-quality, locally-led health solutions.

Two Distinct Tracks

The program recognizes that researchers have different needs at different career stages. Therefore, it offers two specialized tracks:

  1. Advanced & Translational Training (ATT): This track targets experienced researchers. Specifically, it focuses on “translational” science—moving discoveries from the laboratory into clinical practice.
  2. Young Professional Programme (YPP): This track supports early-career scientists. Here, the focus lies on foundational skills, mentorship, and career development.

Program Benefits

Fellows receive comprehensive support designed to accelerate their careers. Typically, Mastercard Foundation programs provide:

  • Full Funding: The fellowship covers stipends, research costs, and training fees.
  • Mentorship: Fellows gain access to leading experts in African clinical research.
  • Networking: Participants join a pan-African community of scientists, fostering collaboration across borders.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must meet specific geographic and professional requirements.

  • Citizenship: You must be an African national.
  • Location: You must be based at an African institution.
  • Track Specifics:
    • ATT: Requires a PhD or MD with significant research experience.
    • YPP: Targets recent graduates or those in the early stages of their research careers.
