SEF Research Fellows Program

The Southern Education Foundation (SEF) Research Fellows program supports early- to mid-career scholars who are committed to advancing education justice and opportunity across the South. The program is designed to bridge the gap between research and real-world impact by producing actionable research that informs policy and practice. Fellows work alongside SEF staff and partners, exploring critical issues such as educational access, school funding justice, college affordability, early learning, and workforce development.

Program Benefits

Eligibility Criteria

Excellent candidates for the program include:

  • Doctoral candidates (ABD) or postdoctoral researchers focused on education, public policy, economics, sociology, or related disciplines.
  • Early- to mid-career researchers working in academia, non-profit, or policy organizations.
  • Scholars with a demonstrated commitment to education opportunity and improving educational outcomes in the South.
  • Applicants from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application Opens: December 2025. Application Deadline: January 15, 2026. Fellows Announced: March 2026.
